This book presents findings of research on a particular form of Buddhist ritual practiced by Sakyas and Vajracaryas, the inheritors of the monastic tradition and the highest Buddhist castes among the Newars, the indigenous people of Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. The author presents an authentic record of a unique form of Buddhist devotionalism and ritual: the everyday practices of the Newar Buddhists, the sole remnant of South Asia#s once extensive Mahayana community. Specifically, the esoteric liturgies performed each day at the main shrines of bahahs and bahis (as traditional Newar Buddhist viharas are known) are described, and the relationship of these rites to other elements of Newar Buddhist practice are analysed, in order to shed light on connections between the latter and Buddhist practices elsewhere. This book is a major contribution to the study of South Asian ritual and Buddhist devotionalism.

The author, a well known scholar, mountain climber and traveller, has compiled the fascinating life-stories of a number of well known and less known Nineteenth Century European travellers in the Himalaya and Central Asia. We meet the Hungarian grammarian and scholar Csoma de Koros, the Englishman Richmond Shakespear, "Knight Errant in Central Asia" and the famous botanist Joseph Dalton Hooker. Then there are Ashley Eden, whose not so successful forays into Bhutan and Sikkim are well known, as well as the educator William Delafield Arnold who worked mostly in Punjab. And finally we shall meet the Moravian missionaries in Lahoul and Ladakh.

Maos Ex-Dolmetscher kehrt nach China zurück
"Ja, ich habe Heimweh" gibt Zhou Chun offen zu, "ich bin doch nicht anders als die vielen Chinesen im Ausland, die am Ende ihres Lebens gerne in ihre Heimmat zurückkkehren möchten. - Das Laub fällt zur Baumwurzel nieder - nennen wir das."
Zhou Chun, geboren 1926 in Shanghai, lebte seit dem Massaker auf dem Platz des Himmlischen Friedens 1988 als Gastprofessor, Journalist und Autor in Berlin. Von 1949 bis 1955 war er erster Dolmetscher für Deutsch im Außenministerium der Volksrepublik China, übersetzte u.a. für Mao Zedong und Zhou Enlai. Die Jahre von 1957 bis 1979 verbrachte er als sogenannter Rechtsabweichler in Straflagern und in der Verbannung.
Nach seinem viel beachteten autobiographischen Roman "Ach, was für ein Leben!" hat Zhou Chun nun kurz vor der Rückkehr nach China einen zweiten Roman auf Deutsch vorgelegt: "Tochter der Partei". Dem Roman liegt das Schicksal seiner Schwester zu Grunde, die sich auf Drängen der KP von Ihrem Mann trennen mußte.
